Designing this project was a fun exercise into contemporary packaging. The process was to combine artistic tradition of making sushi with a contemporary flair and appearance. Having done my fair share of “research” into the subject, I found many fusion and chic sushi establishments around chicago thrived on this combination of old and new world. I took inspiration from Japan’s pre-WWII flag and imagery – the rising sun and and rays extending with the empire. This combined with the peaceful and romantic impression of the the Sakura, or cherry blossom famous in Kyoto. These two inspirations flowed seamlessly with the color pallet of the bottles and containers from the kit; 19th century apothecary type brown bottle and jars that mixed well with the new resurgence of brown and tans as a neutral earth-tone. The result was one of my favorite pieces that had me going back to my favorite sushi shop, Usagi Ya in Wicker Park.
